Ø It is bounded by Nagaland to the north, Mizoram to the south, and Assam to the west.Burma lies to its east.
Ø The "Meetei" ethnic group constitute 27% of
the total population. Tribal people constitute 30% of the state population.
Ø Four major river basins
are in Manipur State: the Barak
River Basin (Barak Valley) to the west, the Manipur River Basin in central
Manipur, the Yu River
Basin in
the east, and a portion of the Lanye River Basin in the north.Among them
the Barak River, the largest of
Manipur, originates in the Manipur Hills
Ø Loktak Lake is the largest
freshwater lake in North -East India is famous for the phumdis
(heterogeneous mass of vegetation, soil, and organic matters at various stages
of decomposition) floating over it. the lake was designated as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.
Ø Keibul Lamjao the only
floating national park in the world floats over Loktak Lake .It is an abode of the rare
and endangered species of Brow
Antlered deer or Sangai also called the Dancing Deer, which has been listed as
an endangered species by International Union for Consevation of Nature.The Ithai barrage is at
the outlet of the Lake.
Ø The state is covered
with over 3,000 square km of bamboo forests, making it one of India’s largest
contributor to its bamboo industry
Ø In 2010, Indian
government announced that it is considering an Asian infrastructure network
from Manipur to Vietnam.The proposed
Trans-Asian Railway Network (TARN), if constructed, will pass through Manipur,
connecting India to Burma, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.
